In one of those odd coincidences that make theists see the hand of God in action, after posting the comment below, the very next article I read contained the definition of "mumpsimus":

"A mumpsimus is someone who obstinately clings to an error, bad habit or prejudice, even after they have been decisively and unambiguously proven wrong."
